At DAGOBA, we take food allergies very seriously.

In the US, the FDA recognizes the following eight foods as food allergens: egg, wheat, soybeans, peanuts, tree nuts, milk, fish, and shellfish. They are often referred to as “the Big 8.” DAGOBA Organic Chocolate complies fully with FDA regulations governing the handling and labeling of the Big 8. In fact, we go beyond them.

DAGOBA Organic Dark Chocolate… and MILK

If you look at a label for DAGOBA Organic dark chocolate, you will see milk listed among the ingredients. We include milk in the list because our DAGOBA dark chocolate products share processing lines with our milk chocolate varieties. As a result, DAGOBA Organic dark chocolate products contain residues of milk ingredients. These residues are present on a continuous basis and at levels significant enough to present a health concern for milk allergic consumers. Thus, although we do not add milk directly to the formulas of our DAGOBA Organic dark chocolate products, we voluntarily include it in the ingredient list out of concern for milk allergic consumers. We believe this precautionary step better protects those consumers. And nothing is more important to us at DABOBA Organic chocolate than the health and safety of our consumers.

DAGOBA Organic Chocolate… and GLUTEN

All DAGOBA Organic Chocolate is produced at the DAGOBA plant in Ashland, Oregon which has been producing gluten free products since its inception. All ingredients brought in for our organic chocolate are tested for gluten in a separate facility AND come with letters from our suppliers stating that their product does not contain gluten.


In 2013, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) defined the term “gluten free” for voluntary use in the labeling of foods as foods that are:

  1. Inherently gluten free; or 
  2. Do not contain an ingredient that is:
    1. A gluten-containing grain;
    2. Derived from a gluten-containing grain that has not been processed to remove gluten;
    3. Derived from a gluten-containing grain that has been processed to remove gluten, if the use of that ingredient results in the presence of 20 parts per million (ppm) or more gluten in the food.
  3. Also, any unavoidable presence of gluten in the food must be less than 20 ppm. 

DAGOBA’s gluten standards for ingredients and manufacturing are aligned with FDA’s rule as well as industry standards and certification schemes.

DAGOBA Organic Chocolate… and TREENUTS

Our DAGOBA Organic Chocolate manufacturing facility in Ashland, Oregon produces several varieties of DAGOBA chocolate that contain almonds.  The labels for those products list almonds in the ingredient statement.  In addition, from time to time, we expand our portfolio to include bars that contain other tree nuts, and we include those tree nuts in the ingredient statement.  Finally, we believe stating on our labels that our chocolate is produced on shared equipment with tree nuts best protects consumers who may have tree nut allergies.  And nothing is more important to us at DAGOBA Organic Chocolate than the health and safety of our consumers.
