Intrigued by chocolate’s ancient legacy as a “food of the gods” for the Mayans and Aztecs, our founder Frederick Schilling started making organic chocolate in his Colorado-based home kitchen in 2001.
Experimenting with imaginative infusions of fruits, herbs and flowers, he built a loyal following delighted by his unique chocolate alchemy. The name Frederick chose for his new endeavor—DAGOBA—was derived from the Sanskrit word for temple.
Eventually, Frederick built his own little temple of chocolate—a small factory in Ashland, Oregon. Here, his passion crystallized into a business with a mission:
To craft deeply satisfying chocolate in a socially responsible way.
DAGOBA Organic Chocolate is still produced in small batches at this single-line factory in Ashland, and our company remains woven into the fabric of the local community, supporting Ashland’s rich Shakespearean heritage, local sports teams and other organizations and events.
Like our founder, we believe the best chocolate not only tastes good—it does good, too. That’s why DAGOBA Organic Chocolate sources its cacao only from Rainforest Alliance Certified™ farms with non-GMO Project Verified ingredients.
To further our mission, DAGOBA Organic Chocolate established the One for All Cacao Project in 2016. The One for All Cacao Project invests in a non-profit fund administered by the New Venture Fund a 501(c)(3) with the objective of strengthening cacao communities by advancing the role of women in cocoa production. We hope to shine a light on the unique challenges and opportunities that cacao communities face, and help them strengthen the valuable role of women. We are committed to empowering community members to identify and prioritize opportunities and challenges, and jointly develop customized, sustainable plans of action to address them.
Join us on our journey to honor the senses, the land and the women who cultivate each crop of cacao. Experience the unique complexities of our inspired chocolate and its certifications. Learn more about our thoughtful ingredients and the women who make it possible. And feel good about every delicious bite.
